Eiken Exam Overview
The Eiken Test (実用英語技能検定 or 英検) is Japan's most widely recognized English proficiency test, administered by the Eiken Foundation of Japan. It's accepted by schools, universities, and employers throughout Japan as a reliable measure of English ability.
The test is divided into seven levels, from Grade 5 (beginner) to Grade 1 (advanced), with each level assessing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills through a two-stage examination process.
Exam Format
Each Eiken level consists of two stages: a written test (including listening comprehension) and an interview test. The interview is required only for candidates who pass the written portion, which typically occurs about a month later.
Listening
Audio passages and questions that test your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
Practice GamesReading

Written Test Strategies
Vocabulary Section: Study common prefixes, suffixes, and root words to help deduce the meaning of unfamiliar words. Create flashcards for words you struggle with and review them regularly.
Reading Section: Look for keywords in the questions first, then scan the passage for those terms to quickly locate relevant information. Practice skimming and scanning techniques to save time.
Time Management: Allocate specific amounts of time for each section based on the number of questions and your comfort level. Leave 5-10 minutes at the end to review your answers.
Listening Section Tips
Preview Questions: Use the time before each audio clip to preview the answer choices so you know what information to listen for. Underline keywords in the questions.
Focus on Key Details: Pay special attention to numbers, names, times, and locations as these are often key to answering questions correctly. Take brief notes if allowed.
Move On: If you miss something, make your best guess and move on - don't let one difficult question distract you from the next item. You can often infer answers from context.
Interview Test Preparation
Clear Speech: Practice speaking clearly and at a moderate pace. Record yourself to evaluate your pronunciation and fluency. Use language learning apps for guided speaking exercises.
Common Topics: Familiarize yourself with common interview topics and questions for your Eiken level. Practice answering them concisely and confidently.
Mock Interviews: Conduct mock interviews with a teacher or language partner. Focus on receiving and responding to questions naturally.
