A file is a digital document containing information - like a Word document, photo, video, or music file. Each file has a name and extension (e.g., report.pdf, photo.jpg).
A folder (also called directory) is a container that stores and organizes files and other folders. Think of it like a digital filing cabinet.

Press Windows + E or click the folder icon in taskbar
Go to where you want to create the folder (e.g., Documents, Desktop)
Method 1: Right-click empty space → New → Folder
Method 2: Press Ctrl + Shift + N
Method 3: Click "New folder" button in toolbar
Type a descriptive name and press Enter
Click the Finder icon in Dock or press Cmd + Space and type "Finder"
Go to where you want to create the folder (e.g., Documents, Desktop)
Method 1: Right-click (or Control-click) empty space → New Folder
Method 2: Press Cmd + Shift + N
Method 3: File menu → New Folder
Type a descriptive name and press Return
Windows: Ctrl + C to copy, Ctrl + V to paste
Mac: Cmd + C to copy, Cmd + V to paste
Windows: Ctrl + X to cut, Ctrl + V to paste
Mac: Cmd + C then Cmd + Option + V to move
Windows: Select file, press F2, type new name
Mac: Select file, press Return, type new name
Windows: Select and press Delete (Recycle Bin) or Shift + Delete (permanent)
Mac: Select and press Cmd + Delete (Trash)
Windows: Search box in File Explorer or Windows + S
Mac: Cmd + Space for Spotlight search
Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (Mac) and click each file
Or click first file, hold Shift, click last file
Don't use these characters in file names as they can cause problems:

Regular backups protect your files from computer crashes, theft, or accidental deletion.
Keep at least 3 copies of important files
Store on 2 different types (e.g., computer + external drive)
Keep 1 copy off-site or in cloud storage
